Depot’s Grand Opening is July 2

We’re getting so excited here. After 8 years of work, the Depot graduated from restoration and is waiting to receive its brand-new shiny exhibits next week. It opens for business Saturday, July 2!!!!!!

The exhibits were developed by Traub Design Associates, http://www.traubdesignassociates.com/.  The Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Foundation gave us a grant to fund the exhibits.

I’ll post pictures as the exhibits are installed.

Thank you, Buena Vistans, for your on-going support for this major project.  Now, starting July 2, we all get to enjoy the BV Depot.

Dolls inhabit museum gallery

A number of dolls – antique, modern, gorgeous, well-loved – moved into the museum gallery last Saturday.  Several local ladies are loaning us their doll collections until June 11.  Check out these beauties!

How about this guy – too cute for words…A miniature nun from Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe:

The face of love:   And a porch swing occupied by this darling character:
Come to the museum any day before June 11 to see these delightful dolls as well as many more.  (Hours:  Mon-Sat 10-3, Sun 12-3.  Museum Admission: Adults $5.00, youth $1.00, families $10.00)

A big thank you goes to Billie Love for coordinating this special exhibit.

Creative Contest for Between Fences

Buena Vista Heritage presents the “Between Fences” Creative Contests

Buena Vista Heritage proudly announces a trio of creative contests in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution’s “Between Fences” exhibit August 12 – September 30, 2011.  The Theme for the contest is FENCES.

The contest has three Categories:
PHOTOGRAPHY

There are four Age Divisions:

Judging Criteria
Each entry will be judged on how well it portrays the theme of “Fences”, and on its artistic and technical merits.  Judges will award winners in each Age Division for each Category (12 awards).  Judges will award one Grand Champion in each Category (photography, video and writing).  The three Grand Champions will receive a cash prize.  All decisions by the judges are final.

Since Buena Vista Heritage is a non-profit organization dependant on donations in order to operate, we ask each adult artist to donate at least $5.00 per entry to help defray expenses and to support BVH’s mission of preserving and sharing the history of Buena Vista and Chaffee County for the education and enjoyment of all.

Winners will be announced at the “Between Fences” Opening Reception on Friday, August 12.

Entries must be received by July 15.  Deliver to the Heritage Museum, 506 East Main during open hours (Mon-Sat 10-5, 12-5 on Sunday, after May 28), or mail to Buena Vista Heritage, POB 1414, Buena Vista CO 81211.

Museum gets facelift

Bill Simon, board member, chicken caretaker, and landscape visionary, tackled the brushy museum exterior.  Notice the scraggly juniper bushes and the giant tree in the foreground on the left.

The tall evergreen on the far right is a Blue Spruce.  Notice how much it grew in the five years between these photos.

The two evergreens framing the museum door are both Bristlecone Pines, trees native to California and a few places in the Rockies, like along the Mount Evans Highway.  They grow at high altitude right at tree-line, so they’re usually squat, twisted trees.  Ours are examples of 40-year-old bristlecones grown with protection and water.  A Bristlecone in California is the old living individual organism on Earth.

After Bill finished, the museum face became easy to see.  It’s now all neat and tidy.
